Scope and Content: An orderly book kept by Thomas Russell Aide-de-camp to General John Stark for the brigade commanded by Stark. The first entry of the book takes place in Orangetown, NY. It includes a report of General Nathanael Greene, who was in command while Washington was away, on the discovery of Benedict Arnold's treason. The orderly book includes entries on the trial of and sentence to death of Major John Andre, Arnold's contact in the British army. The orders reflect concern for the security of West Point, NY where the troops moved on October 8, which was possibly endangered because of Arnold's desertion. Entries include that Washington appointed Major General William Heath to command at West Point after Arnold's desertion. The orderly book contains information on security measures taken and routine courts martial held. Orders for November 2 include the resolution adopted by the Continental Congress systematizing the organization of the army. On November 18, Lieutenant Caleb Stark is appointed Aide-de-camp to General Stark. After the war, John Ray used the books for his accounts from 1809 through 1814. An index of names in this volume is available.
