Description: Sampler. Made by Mary Ann Batchelder (1812-1892), Loudon, NH; 1820-1825. Unfinished. Embroidered with silk threads on loosely woven linen ground. Five alphabets: first, large-scale block capital letters worked in olive cross stitches; second, script capitals worked in dark green cross stitches; third, chartreuse block capital letters, with "U" through "Z" brought up to the line above when she ran out of room below; fourth, small-scale block capital letters in olive cross stitches; fifth, lower-case letters in black cross stitches, followed by numbers one through nine. Between each line of alphabets are decorative line designs in various colors in cross, queen, satin, and eyelet stitches. Across the bottom is a sawtooth border in olive and pink. Other three sides have a similar pattern but narrower and with paler shades of olive and pink. The bottom third of the sampler is blank and was probably intended to be filled with a verse or scene. The maker's name does not appear on the sampler. Sides of linen are selvage; top and bottom edges are hemmed.
