Description: Sampler. Made by Betsey Connor Morey (1826-1898), Wilmot, NH; 1836. Worked with silk twist on loosely woven tan linen ground. Sampler features six alphabets in different styles: first and second are large block capitals in cross stitch; third is block capitals in Algerian eye stitch; fourth is script capitals in cross stitch; fifth is small-scale block capitals in cross stitch; and sixth is lower-case letters in cross stitch. The colors of the letters alternate between light blue, dark blue, brick brown, dark brown, and olive. At the bottom is a verse worked in cross stitch: "Tis true religion that will give / Real Pleasure when we live / Tis true religion that will supply / Solid comfort when we die." To the right of this verse is stitched: "Betsey / Con nor / Mo rey / aged 10 dec14 / [across bottom] Au gust 16th 1827 Wil mot." Sides are selvage; top and bottom edges are hemmed. Variation of a verse from A Discourse on the Vast Importance of True Religion, 1789, by Anglican clergyman, David Simpson (1745-1799).
