Description: Sampler. Attributed to Wealthy Emeline Carey (1814-1862), Lempster, NH; 1829. Worked in dark and light blue, tan, and green silk twist and floss on loosely woven linen, featuring four alphabets: first, block capital letters in dark blue cross stitch, followed by an ampersand and numbers one through eleven; second, large script capitals A through W in dark blue cross stitch; third, lower-case letters in light blue cross stitch; and fourth, small, lower-case letters in beige cross stitch, followed by numbers one through twelve. Centered below this section is the inscription "Emeline Carey / 1829" worked in beige cross stitches. Across the bottom of the sampler is a motif of crossed feathers (or ferns) flanked by two pine trees. These motifs are worked in shades of green and blue in cross, satin, and chain stitches.
