Object Name: Sampler

Object ID: 1919.001.01

Creator: Moulton, A.

Date: 1800-1825

Description: Marking sampler. Made by A. Moulton, not dated. Silk twist worked in cross stitch on a loosely woven tan linen ground. Three alphabets worked in black: first, capital block letters, second, script capitals; third, lower-case a through x, followed by numbers one through ten. Below this is cross-stitched "A Moulton. E" [unfinished]. "E J" is worked below "Moulton." Other bits of stitching in this area can only be described as scribbles; two eyelets are worked in the lower left corner. The bottom edge is selvage; other edges are hemstitched. A plain black border of cross stitches frames three sides; a short run of black back stitches appears at the upper left corner. The sampler is worked entirely in black, except for simple lines of blue or green between alphabets and a line of blue/cream checkerboard design after the last alphabet.
