Description: Sampler. Made by Melinda Morgan (1803-1856), Pembroke, NH; 1810-1820. Embroidered with silk threads on very loosely woven linen ground fabric. Within a cartouche at the center top is cross-stitched "Pembroke / Melinda Morgan." Following are lines of alphabets: first, script capitals in yellow cross stitches, followed by numbers one through eight; second, block capitals in pale aqua, followed by filling designs and an ampersand; third, lower-case letters in aqua cross stitch. Across the bottom is embroidered a basket of flowers (now cream, but originally pink) flanked by floral sprays, worked in chain, satin, and bullion stitches. The side borders are trailing green vines with cream-colored flower buds, and at top are two more bouquets of flowers in cream and aqua flanking the name cartouche. The left side of the linen is selvage; the other three edges are hemmed.
