Description: Marking sampler. Made by Anna Sawyer (1773-1833), Hopkinton, NH; 1792. Alphabets and verse worked in alternating brown, green, blue, and cream cross-stitched letters in silk twist on a loosely-woven tan linen ground. The first three lines are an alphabet of block capital letters followed by an ampersand and the year 1792. Following this is the inscription and verse, with the colors changing every few letters: "ANNA SAWYER / IS MY NAME AND / ENGLISH IS MY NA / TION AND HOPKI / NTON IS MY DWE / LLING PLACE A /ND CHRIST IS MY / SALVATION * 19." The top edge of the linen is selvage; the other three sides are finished with blanket stitching. The top section of the sampler is divided from the rest with green blanket stitches along both edges and a row of green cross stitches in a diamond pattern. In this section there is an alphabet and the date: ABCDEFGHIKL / MNOPQRSTUVW / XYZ 1792. The second section is surrounded by yellow blanket stitches and reads as follows: ANNASAWYER / ISMYNAMEAND / ENGLISHISMYNA / TIONANDHOPKI / NTONISMYDWE / LLINGPLACEAND / CHRISTISMY / SALVATION. 19.
