Description: Marking Sampler. Made by Elizabeth Weare (1749-1813), Hampton Falls, NH; 1761. Hemmed linen square cross-stitched with lines of alphabet letters and inscription in cream-colored silk thread. The first three lines are an alphabet of block capital letters and an ampersand. The fourth line consists of numbers one through zero; fifth line is the inscription, "elizabeth weare," and the last line is "born june 17-- [hole]." A plain line of cross stitches separates each line of letters.

Provenance: Made by Elizabeth (Weare) Dow (1749-1813), daughter of Meshech and Mehitable (Wainwright) Weare. The donor, Allen L. Goodhue (1906-1980), was a descendant of Meshech Weare.
