Description: Marking Sampler. Made by Lydia Hacket (1801-1860), Dunbarton, NH; 1814. Worked with cotton threads in cross stitch on plain-woven linen with three alphabets: first, script capitals; second, block capitals, followed by random letters "DMNVWU" and "Dunbarton"; third, lower-case letters followed by the numbers one through eight, then ten through fourteen." Following the numbers is "New hamshir." The inscription, starting on the sampler's seventh line, reads: "Lydia Hacket Sampler wrought when at sco / ol [school] to Mary Jameson August 26 1814 aged 13 / Lydia Hacket is my name english is my nation / Dunbarton is my dwelling Place and Christ is my / Salvation." Some eyelets are created with buttonhole wheels in the line above the final verse. A strawberry vine is worked across the top, and the sides have a simple undulating line for a border. Thread colors are shades of tan and blue. The bottom edge has been cut, turned, and basted. The other three sides are hemmed.
