Description: Marking Sampler. Attributed to Mary Brown (1802-1813), Wenham, MA; 1813. Cross-stitched sampler worked in black, green, and cream silk threads on loosely woven brown tow linen ground fabric. The sampler features two alphabets: first, block capital letters in black followed by an ampersand and the numbers one through seven; second, large script capitals in green. At the bottom of the sampler is the inscription in cream silk: "Samuel Dodge born feb 23 AD 1800 / Mary Browns Sampler wrought / in the 12 year of her Age AD 1813." The bottom edge of the tow linen is selvage; the other three edges are hemmed. There is a satin-stitched sawtooth border in cream thread along the bottom edge only, but much of it is missing due to abrasion damage.

Provenance: From the Rogers Collection, a gift (and later bequest) of Josephine Rogers given in memory of her husband, Harry K. Rogers. Consists of a large collection of New Hampshire glass, parian ware, furniture, and other decorative arts. This accession includes: furniture, glass, tie-backs, mirror knobs, miscellaneous brass hardware and articles. Many of the pieces in the Rogers' collection was acquired locally (Suncook, N.H.) from estate sales/auction or dealers, and used to furnish their Suncook, N.H. home.
