Description: Sampler. Made by Laura W. Sanborn (1804-1830), New Chester, NH; 1814. Worked mostly in cross stitch in cotton threads on plain-woven linen ground fabric, with four alphabets: first, block capital letters in shades of tan; second, lower-case letters in dark blue; third, script capital letters in tan, blue, and cream. The fourth alphabet, which is in the lower half of the sampler below the inscription, is larger block capitals worked in Algerian eye stitch in dark brown, tan, blue, cream, and Q in red. Letters A through E are repeated on the next line. Inscription in center of sampler: "Laura W Sanborn of New / Chester was born in Sept. / 1804 aged ten years in 1814." At lower right is cross-stitched the outline of a heart with a stylized plant inside of it, and two crown motifs on top. The lower left corner of the sampler is blank, with the last alphabet unfinished. A narrow sawtooth border is worked in brown satin stitch around all four edges; a chain-stitched border is partially worked around three sides. All four edges are hemmed.
