Description: Marking Sampler. Made by Eliza Greenough, Chester, NH; c. 1830. Long and narrow, with three alphabets worked in silk twist and floss on loosely woven linen: first, block capital letters in brown cross stitches, followed by numbers one through ten, all on one line; second, script capitals in brown cross stitch, letters A though U on one line, and letters V though Z on next line, followed by numbers one through nine and then the third alphabet of mostly lower-case letters. The fourth line of the sampler bears the inscription, "ELIZA GREENOUGH" in black eyelet stitches, flanked by incomplete lettering--possibly intended to be "AGE" on the left [but only the "E" is recognizable], and letters A through D on the right. Decorative elements are partially worked in the lower corners, and a simple border of blue cross stitches around the edges and between the lines of alphabets. Lower edge is selvage; other three sides are hemmed.
