Sampler

Object Name: Sampler

Object ID: 1969.504.07

Place of Origin: New Hampshire

Date: 1770-1830

Description: Sampler. No name, no date; 1770-1830. Partial, cut down from its original size. Embroidered mostly in cross stitch in light blue silk twist on plain-woven tan linen and features two alphabets: first, block capital letters, with some letters repeated, and some left out (J, U), followed by numbers one through eight. The second alphabet is letters A through G worked as large block capitals in Algerian eye stitch, and letters H through S worked in a smaller scale in eyelet stitch. Below this line, the sampler is worked with random letters, sometimes from the other side, so these letters are upside down and backwards. (What was previously interpreted to be the date 1881, is actually the letters IBBM, with the M hemmed over.) Worked mostly in light blue, but remnants of pink and cream letters are seen in this lower section. The top edge of the linen is selvage; the lower edge is hemmed, and the sides are cut, turned under once, and basted.
