Description: Marking sampler. Made by Adeline (Augusta) Avery (1828-1899), Campton, NH; c. 1835. Dark blue cotton threads cross-stitched on plain-woven linen, featuring three alphabets: first, capital block letters; second, capital script letters [with C and D in olive thread]; third, lower-case letters a through y. At lower right is inscription: "Adeline Avery." All four edges of the linen are hemmed.

Provenance: Probably made by Adeline A. (Avery) Smith (1828-1899) of Campton and Plymouth, NH. Adeline was the daughter of Ruth F. Bucknam (1805-1877) and Ezra W. Avery (1805-1885). The donor, Alberta R. Drew (1867-1962), was the niece of Adeline A. (Avery) Smith.
