Description: Sampler. Made by Hannah Bridge (1807-1849), Billerica, MA; c. 1815. Primarily pink, yellow, and green silk floss and twist worked on loosely woven tan linen. Features a decorative header of a central basket of flowers flanked by yellow and black birds, white sheep, and pink pineapple plants. Below this appear two alphabets: first, capital block letters worked in pink cross stitch; second, lower-case letters worked in pink cross stitch. The alphabets are followed by the inscription: "Hannah Bridge AE 8 ye." The bottom panel features a yellow hipped-roof house under an arching willow tree. The green floss used for the willow tree is crinkled. On the right is a floral design bigger than the house, with an anchor-like base. Chevron border across the bottom edge. Stitches used in the decorative elements include outline, Irish, surface satin, satin, and straight. All four edges of the linen are hemstitched.
