Description: Sampler. Made by Lucretia Abbot (1812-1899), Concord, NH; 1824. Worked with shades of aqua green, blue, tan, and cream (originally pink) silk twist on loosely woven tan linen, featuring three alphabets: first, large block capitals, with A through G worked in eyelet stitch, H through O worked in cross stitches, and P through Z worked in squares of satin stitches; second alphabet of block capitals worked in cross stitches [with letters A C D S and Y repeated], followed by numbers one through nine; third alphabet of script capitals A through Y, with the letter J repeated. At the bottom is the inscription: "Lucretia Abbot aged 12 years." The sampler has a border on the sides and top of an undulating vine sprouting geometric motifs; narrower border of alternating green and white sawteeth edges all four sides. Linen edges are hemstitched. In addition to cross, eyelet, and satin stitches, the sampler includes a line of queen stitch above the inscription, as well as herringbone, straight, and ladder stitches separating lines of alphabets.
