Description: Sampler. Made by Hepzibah Dow (1807-1865), Concord, NH; 1822. Silk twist and floss embroidered on loosely woven linen, featuring five alphabets: first, capital block letters A through Q worked in eyelet stitch; second, capital block letters worked in squares of satin stitch; third, capital script letters in cross stitch, followed by number one through ten; fourth, smaller-scale capital letters and ampersand in cross stitch; and fifth, lower-case letters and ampersand in cross stitch. These letters are all worked in green silk twist. The lower half of the sampler features a verse centered under crossed fronds worked in light green silk floss: "Would you then know true Peace and joy / Let lov [sic] your fleeting hours employ / What e'er can bless our mortal span, / To love to God and love to man." The verse is worked in black cross stitches. Centered at the bottom is a garland of flowers tied with a bow. The floral motifs are worked in satin and eyelet stitches, and French knots. The edges are hemstitched with green silk twist. The sampler is framed behind glass in a modern mahogany frame.
