Description: Sampler. Made by Polly Rundlet (1783-1872), c. 1794 [?]. Silk twist worked on plain-woven linen, with four alphabets: first, block capital letters in cross stitch, in cream, black, and tan colors; second, script capital letters A through W in cream and tan cross stitch; third, block capital letters embroidered in squares of cream and tan satin stitch; fourth, lower-case letters in cross stitch, cream and black. Across bottom of sampler is cross-stitched the inscription: "Polly Rundlet's Sampler / Aged 11 Born July 6 17-- "[perhaps the beginning of an 8 here, rest is missing]. Decorative lines of cross stitching and satin stitching separate the lines of alphabets. The left edge of the linen is selvage; other edges are hemmed. Framed in wood and glazed; framer's label reads "DOW'S / MUSIC & ART STORE / 78 / STATE / STREET, / NEWBURYPORT, MASS."

Provenance: The sampler belonged to donor's husband's mother, Bessie W. Hills (1907-1972), who frequented auctions in New Hampshire. Genealogical research has revealed that it was probably made by Polly Rundlet (1783-1872), Stratham, NH. She was the daughter of Reuben and Hannah (Ellsworth) Rundlett, who married Jonathan Daniels in 1812 and resided in Sanbornton, NH.
