Description: Sampler. Made by Amanda K. Winter (1815-1869), Grantham, NH; 1828. Silk embroidery on cream linen ground. Five alphabets, worked in cross stitches unless otherwise noted: first, capitals in block letters worked in squares; second, capitals in block letters worked in Algerian eye stitch; third, script capitals; fourth, small-scale block capitals; fifth, lower-case letters, followed by the inscription, "AMANDA * 123467891011121314" [note that the number 5 is missing]. Below this is the inscription, "Amanda. K Winter. Grantham. aged 12 years 1828." A verse follows below: "Jesus Permit they gracious name to stand / As the first efforts of an infants hand / And whilst her fingers oar this cloth does move / Engage her tender heart to seek thy love." Baskets of flowers flank the verse. The letters and verse are all stitched in alternating colors, including black, cream, tan, olive, and pale teal. Stitches, in addition to cross and Algerian eye, include satin and outline. All four sides are hemmed.
