Description: Sampler. Made by Eleanor Haines (1801-1887), Greenland, NH; 1813. Silk embroidery on loosely woven linen. Four alphabets worked in black: capitals in block letters followed by numbers one through four; script capital letters; smaller-scale block capital letters followed by numbers five though seven; and lower-case block letters, followed by the vowels, "a e i o u," and "w." At the bottom is the inscription: "Elenor Haines Aged / 12 Wrought in the yr 1813." A floral vine border undulates around the sides and top. Across the bottom are worked various simple floral basket and small tree-like motifs. The sampler is worked mostly in cross stitches in fine black and green silk twist, but the flowers of the vines are worked in satin stitch with silk floss, and the vine stems are worked in green silk twist in a chain stitch. Four sides of the linen are hemstitched.
