Description: Sampler. Made by Angelina Brown (1828-1874), Sutton, NH; 1840. Silk threads on loosely woven linen, worked with four alphabets: the first is capital block letters worked in Algerian eye stitch; the second alphabet is script capital letters worked in cross stitch, as are all the rest of the letters and numbers of the sampler; the third alphabet is block capital letters, and the fourth alphabet is lower case block letters. Numbers one through nine and zero appear at the end of the first alphabet, on the third line of the sampler. Below the alphabets appears the inscription, "Angellina Brown aged 12 years / Sutton NH August 29, 1840." The lower section of the sampler is unfinished and blank. Border of a stylized floral vine, worked in solid green at top and bottom, and in green and dark pink (now faded to tan) along the sides. The vines are worked in rather messy chain stitches. All four edges are finished with hem stitching.
