Description: Sampler. Made by Martha Ann Cooledge (1816-1885), Hillsborough, NH; 1825. Embroidered with silk twist and floss in shades of cream, pink, and green on a brown linen ground. Rows of alphabets consist of first, large block capital letters worked in Algerian eye stitch; second, script capital letters in cross stitch; and third, lower-case block letters in cross stitch, followed by numbers one through eight. Below this appears the cross-stitched inscription: "MARTHA ANN COOLEDGE WROUGH [sic] / IN THE 9th YEAR OF HER age / Preserve this safe from / moth and rust / When I lie mouldring in the dust / Hillsborough July The 21st 1825." Centered within the inscription block is a double-handled basket of pink flowers, worked in satin and laid stitches. The threads of this motif are floss, some of which are crinkled due to having been made from untwisted plies of silk twist. Around the edges are a border of a pink three-lobed floral vine, and an outer border resembling an egg-and-dart pattern. Top and bottom linen edges are selvage; sides are hemmed.
