Description: Sampler. Made by Bridget Walker (1784-1805), Concord, NH; 1795. Undyed linen plain weave ground. Silk embroidery threads in reds, pinks, greens, blues, browns, and yellows. All four edges of the linen are folded to the back and hemmed with green silk. Inside this green hem stitching is an undulating border cross stitched from at least two shades of brick red or brown thread, which have faded to brown and tan. A floral and vine satin-stitched border is present on the top and sides but does not completely cover all of the inked marks the maker made when she was mapping out the embroidery. The central field consists of two sets of cross-stitched alphabets (one upper and one lower case) and one set of numerals divided into two sections. Alphabet and numerals, followed by "Bridget Walker her sampler / wrought in the 12th year of / her age 1795". Below the maker's name and date is a long inscription cross stitched in at least two shades of dark pink, the second of which has faded to a pale pink. At the bottom of the composition is a floral urn flanked by two animals and additional symmetrical floral designs in cross stitch. Each line of embroidered text is separated by a dark green line of cross stitching. Additional lines and shapes in cross stitch and satin stitch divide and fill areas of the composition.
