Description: Sampler. Made by Mary E. Gray (1826-1904), Boston, MA; c. 1836. Alphabetic bands. Undyed linen plain weave ground; silk embroidery threads in pastel pink and green, dark green, blue, yellow, and lavender. The top, bottom, and right side of the linen are folded to the back and hemmed with pastel green silk. The left side is a selvedge but has been embroidered with the same green thread to provide visual continuity. Each row of embroidery was executed in a different color of silk and each is separated by a line design. In total there are one full and one partial uppercase alphabet, one lowercase alphabet, and one set of numerals; "alphabet" at the end of the row of lowercase letters. "Mary E. Gray aged / 10 years." stitched in green in the bottom section.
