Description: Marking Sampler. Made by Lydia L. Worthen (1818-1902), Concord, NH, c. 1830. Embroidered silk on loosely woven linen ground. Three alphabets: first, medium size block capital letters worked in blue, green, and cream cross stitch; second, script capital letters worked in green and cream cross stitch, ending with number 1 through 9 in dark brown cross stitch; third, lower case letters worked in green and cream cross stitch; fourth, "M, E J, W, L, L, H, W, L, W"; fifth, "Lydia L. Worthen Was born June the 9 AD 1818". Two mourning urns and a weeping willow in lower right corner. Brown stitched borders. Adhered to cardboard. Pencil inscription on back of cardboard: "Mrs. C. E. Hall / 8 3/8 X 17 3/4 4435".

Provenance: Lydia Louisa Worthen (1818-1902) was born in Bow, NH, the daughter of Richard Worthen (1787-1855) and Lydia Wheeler (1790-1848). Her father was a farmer and brickmaker, who made and supplied bricks for the construction of the State House and State Prison as well as many private homes and businesses in the Concord area during the second quarter of the 19th century. In 1852 Lydia L. Worthen married William Hoyt, a farmer, and they lived in Concord and Manchester.
