Description: Photograph, framed, of an original pencil drawing by Cyrus W. King (1819-1881), Brunswick, ME, published by Witherell Robinson, Littleton, NH, c. 1874. Drawing depicts an intricate array of human figures, animals, objects, and symbols, probably intended as a puzzle. Signed twice on drawing, upper left, "CW King / ARTEST / Bath Me", and right of center, "CW King / Bath / Me". Bottom margin of mount printed "Copyrighted in 1874, by C. W. King. WITHERELL ROBINSON, Proprietors, Littleton, NH." In black painted frame with brown faux marbling, glazed.
Dimensions: H-12 W-15.5 inches
Provenance: The size and whereabouts of the original drawing are unknown. It was felt that the photograph would be more appropriate at the Maine State Museum, so NHHS gave them the opportunity to purchase it, but they declined. NHHS purchased it because of its NH connection. Although a photograph, it was acquired by the museum rather than the library, because it was considered more significant as an artwork than as a photograph.
