Description: Painting. Self-portrait of Walter Ingalls (1805-1874), 1873. Oil on canvas. Oval composition on vertical rectangle canvas. Bust-length portrait of a man, facing forward; head turned to left. Sitter has brown graying hair and beard; gray eyes. Wearing a black coat, white shirt with turnover collar and pleated front, gold shirt pin, and black string tie. Green-black background. White painted spandrels. Incised into frame's lower member: "GUIDO FRAME STUDIO / BOSTON"; same inscription repeated but in opposite direction. Gilded frame with plain cove; gilded liner.

Provenance: Given to the NHHS according to the wishes of Walter Ingalls' niece. The niece was either Estelle Conner Vegas of South America (1840-1891), or her sister Vianna Albena Conner of Hopkinton, NH (1842-1905). Both were first cousins, once removed, of the donor.
Possibly acquired by the donor in Washington, DC, where Ingalls spent his last years.
