Description: Sculpture. Model statue of Franklin Pierce. Bronzed plaster. Attributed to Henry Jackson Ellicott (1847-1901), Washington, DC, c. 1896. Less than half life-size statuette of a man, standing on an integral square base, 1 1/8" high, with a flag-draped pedestal at his left; U.S. flag trailing around subject on base to his right side; shield at front of pedestal bearing the NH. state seal (with its representation of a ship on the stocks and sun at horizon within a laurel wreath, outside which, in relief, upper case lettering, is "SIGIILUM REIPUBLICAE NEO HANTONIENSIS 1784." Subject's head turned slightly to his right; iris of eyes defined; pupils not distinct. Wearing an unbuttoned double-breasted frock coat over trousers, vest, shirt having stand collar, neckcloth or stock, and bow tie. Right arm bent at elbow with roll of paper in hand. Left hand resting on top of draped pedestal. Surface bronzed.

Provenance: Model produced by Henry Jackson Ellicott for the 1896 Franklin Pierce Statue Competition. According to a letter from Kirk D. Pierce to Augustus Lukeman, the Ellicott model of the Pierce statue was on display in the New Hampshire Historical Society building in 1914.
