Description: Self-portrait of Walter Ingalls (1805-1874), c. 1855. Oil on canvas. Bust-length oval portrait of a man, facing slightly right. Sitter has brown hair, brown eyes, and furrowed brow. He is wearing a black coat, white waistcoat, white undershirt, and yellow cravat tied in a bow. Graduated gray background. Unsigned. Gilded gesso over oval wood frame, bands of foilate trim around interior and exterior.

Provenance: One of four paintings owned by artist's son, Captain Napoleon Bonaparte Ingalls (1830-1922) of Portland, OR. The paintings descended to artist's great-grandson, George Leighton Jones of Burlingame, CA, who, upon his death in 1980, bequeathed them to donors.
