Description: Pair of crampons used on winter climbs in the White Mountains of New Hampshire by Dr. Ralph Clinton Larrabee (1870-1935) of Boston, MA. Hinge-type steel crampons, each with eight spikes, six rings, and heel bail. Each stamped on top surface, "RICHARD STAUB / ZURICH". Each stamped twice on bottom surface, "BREIT" (wide) and "3". Bindings of cotton webbing with metal buckles. Numbered A and B.

Provenance: Ralph Clinton Larrabee (1870-1935) was a Boston physician, photographer, hiker, winter climber, and a leading member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. He was a two-term president of the AMC and chairman of its Guide Book Committee for many years.
The ice axe and crampons were probably used by Ralph Larrabee on the first known winter traverse of the Presidential Range, which he completed with Herschel Parker in 1896.
