Scope and Content: Undated image of the Contoocook River Bridge on Main Street in Penacook, NH, by H. J. Currier, artist. The caption states, "Contoocook River Bridge-Main Street. The first bridge was built near the Axle Company, it was reached by a highway deflecting from the main road which, after crossing the river, again joined the main road near the Penacook House in Boscawen. Colonel Rolfe intimates that this location was selected because the river was narrow at this point and the expense of a pier could be saved. Upon straighting of the road in 1826, a new bridge became necessary and was constructed upon the site of the present bridge. This bridge stood until 1849, when it was rebuilt and and did service until 1874, it was replaced by one of iron which was replaced by another of iron in 1898." A note from W. J. Drew is also included, which provides dates for the construction of the bridge and inquires if Mr. Perry has "got this?"
