Abstract: This is a collection of legal documents (deeds, wills) of the families of Samuel S. Gove (1837-1927) and his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Fogg Gove (1838-1911). The Goves lived in Nottingham, NH. The Foggs were from neighboring Raymond, NH. There are also a few warrant books used by Samuel Gove as he collected taxes in Nottingham, an autograph book (1882-3) of their son, and several old New Hampshire newspapers (1791, 1798, 1837).
Scope and Content: The Gove Family Papers are legal documents (deeds, wills, etc.) generated by several individuals in the Gove and Fogg families in the 19th Century. Most are from the Gove family, beginning with Jonathan Gove's 1755 deed to what became the family homestead in Nottingham, NH. His descendant, Samuel S. Gove (1837-1927), married Sarah Fogg (1838-1911), from the neighboring town of Raymond, NH; the Fogg materials belonged to her family. The collection also contains a few of Samuel Gove's warrant books used in his activities as a tax collector for the town of Nottingham. Miscellaneous materials include an autograph album with entries in the early 1880s that belonged to Samuel and Sarah's son Fred (1870-1968), several old New Hampshire newspapers, and a couple of unidentified photographs.
Arrangment: The legal documents in this collection belonged to family members from both the Gove and Fogg sides of the family. They are arranged by family, then individuals, then chronologically (except that records of Gove's tax collecting activities are filed separately from his personal documents). Newspapers and photographs are at the end of the collection.
