Scope and Content: John C. Ordway, Jr. Family Papers consist of one box of 14 folders. The first six folders contain scrapbooks dated from 1896-1903. The scrapbooks were assembled back to front so the earliest material is last. It contains information on his investments, particularly in railroads such as the Bradford, Bordell & Kinzua; the Illinois Central; and the Union Pacific. Other investments were in Bigelow Carpet R.L. Day Co. in New York and the Manchester Mills, Stark Mills, Amory Mills and Lowell Manufacturing. It has a varied collection of materials pertaining to areas such as the New Hampshire Society of Cincinnati, 1900; Concord school property evaluation; Concord Carnival; genealogy and the New Hampshire Historical Society; Beaver Meadow Golf Course; and the First Congregational Church. There is a letter from George Abbot about house painting as well as a few letters from James O. Lyford, B.A. Kimball, C.R. Corning, Henry MacFarland, and H.P. Dewey. There is a eulogy of Almira Rice Tappan. Folder 7 contains autograph albums. The military commissions in the collection are for John C. Ordway, Sr. as Ensign dated 1829, Lieutenant dated 1831, Captain dated 1833 and his resignation dated 1833. There are also appointments as collector for the North Congregational Church in 1842 and highway surveyor in 1844. Correspondence in the collection includes a letter regarding pupil Harriet Ordway at the Ladies High School in May of 1847 written by Maria L. Eastman. Two letters in August of 1865 describe the battle of Chancellorsville. There is an 1882 letter regarding travel to Ohio and 1905 New Hampshire Historical Society resolutions on the death of John C. Ordway. The letter book pages concern orders for crutch rubber and miscellaneous estate matters. The legal documents include Harriet S. and E. Frances Ordways purchase of a pew in 1867 and William H. Pitman deeds to them for land in 1891.
