Physical Description: 2 boxes, 1 scrapbook, and 1 oversize folder

Scope and Content: The John Robert "Bob" Savage Papers, 1935-1996, consist primarily of several scrapbooks (actually items kept in plastic sleeves in large three ring binders) kept by Savage. These contain clippings, ephemera, and photographs about his baseball career, mostly with the Philadelphia Athletics between 1942 and 1948. There is also a substantial amount of material about professional baseball alumni activities (ephemera, clippings, correspondence about gatherings, meetings, dinners), including efforts to lobby Major League Baseball for pensions and other retirement benefits. There are also some materials about Savage's post-baseball career as a high school physical education teacher and coach. Scrapbook one contains correspondence of ex Major League Baseball players and newsletters of Major League Baseball alumni associations from 1985 to 1991. The second scrapbook includes a wide variety of materials, many loose or in disorder, about Savage's baseball career, alumni gatherings, post baseball coaching, and other related items from approximately 1935 to 2000. The third scrapbook is a carefully completed album with materials encased in plastic. It consists of a few photographs of his childhood, school memorabilia, military papers and correspondence, and professional career with the Philadelphia Athletics dated 1921 to 1949. The collection also includes some materials filed apart from the scrapbooks. Topics include Savage's military career, with details of his service in Italy, France, and Germany, as well as events around his wounds and receipt of three Purple Hearts. There is a small amount of information about Savage and his brother, Maurice's businesses (Sanicot Products and the Bartage Hotel). Last are items on Savage's attempt to sue Topps baseball card company for reprinting his original card without his permission. Except for a few pages in scrapbook three, there is very little personal information or correspondence about Savage and his family or his years selling sporting equipment for the Wilson Sporting Goods Company.
