Scope and Content: The New Hampshire Then and Now Photograph Collection consists of modern prints of historic images, the originals taken between circa 1873 and 1978, and prints of contemporary images of the same locations, taken between 2003 and 2005. These 40 pairs of photographs of places, people, and events were taken by photographer Peter E. Randall for a book and exhibition held at the New Hampshire Historical Society from October 14, 2006 to March 31, 2007. Also included are two historic images without a corresponding contemporary print. The images explore the changes in New Hampshire over a century, such as the boulder lodged between the narrow walls of the Flume in Franconia Notch, NH, which fell in 1883. Other images include the town common in Hampton Falls circa 1905 and 2003; Cornish town meetings in 1947 and 2004; New Castle's Hotel Wentworth in 1880 and Wentworth by the Sea Hotel in 2005; Haverhill Corner in the 1890s and in 2004; Post Office Square in North Sutton around 1900 and in 2003; the view from Mill No. 2 in Keene in 1927 and in 2005; and tourists looking at the Old Man of the Mountain in 1978 and the faceless Cannon Mountain in 2003. An index of images is included with the collection. See also: "New Hampshire Then and Now: Contemporary Photographs and Essay" by Peter E. Randall, call number: 917.78 R189t.
