Abstract: The Ralph C. Larrabee Photograph Collection, 1880s-1939, contains photographic prints, stereographs, guidebooks, and film and glass plate negatives of Boston physician Ralph C. Larrabee, who was an active member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and avid outdoorsman.
Scope and Content: The Ralph C. Larrabee Photograph Collection, 1880s-1939, contains photographic prints, stereographs, guidebooks, and film and glass plate negatives of Boston physician Ralph C. Larrabee, who was an active member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and avid outdoorsman. The collection is comprised primarily of photographic prints taken on various hiking trips by Ralph C. Larrabee in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The images include both loose and mounted photographs and are in a variety of sizes, ranging from small 2" by 3" prints to 60" panoramas. The panoramic images, primarily of mountain ranges, were photographed in stages, then taped together to create the scene. The majority of images are of trails, mountains, camps, and plants in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and throughout Massachusetts. Larrabee printed numerous copies of many images in this collection, varying how they were cropped and their exposure. These duplicates can be found throughout the collection. Also included are images of hiking trips of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), which includes locations in New York, and numerous images depicting the AMC Woodlots, primarily in Dover, MA. The AMC Woodlots in Charles River Village and Dover were the properties of Reverend R. W. Hale of Dover. The proceeds from wood cutting by AMC members went to war relief work. The first work done was in Brookline, MA, where about 100 cords were cut. A number of photographs were taken at this first camp in May 1918, as well as in the second camp in spring 1919. Portraits of hiking companions, families, and friends' houses round out the photograph collection. While the majority of images were taken by Larrabee, a number of images were taken by his hiking companions and are labeled with the photographer's name. Twenty-six boxes of glass plate negatives are also included, which correlate to some of the printed images in this collection. In addition to prints, stereographs created by Larrabee; stereographs by B. W. Kilburn and 10 AMC White Mountain Guidebooks, which Larrabee annotated throughout, and date from 1907 to 1934 are also included.
