Scope and Content: The Josiah Bartlett of Lee, NH, Papers, 1812-1869, include bounty and forage accounts, orders for shoes and cockades, papers from the War of 1812, and town papers while he was surveyor, tax collector, county treasurer, etc. Bartlett's War of 1812 papers reflect his positions as quartermaster and recruiter; provide accounts for journeys from Concord, NH, to Portsmouth, NH, carrying messages for Colonel Moody Bedel and Nathaniel Gilman; and provide names and amounts paid as bounties and for forage in Concord. Also included are orders for coats and shoes and cockades, etc. as well as pay slips for Bartlett and a servant. Correspondents include: Moody Bedel, George Packer, Timothy Upham, Timothy Dix, Philip and Obadiah Carrigain, Samuel Gile, Bradbury Bartlett, George W. Rogers, Benjamin Thompson, Zenas Wheeler, Daniel Greenleaf, and many more. The town records include non-resident property inventories for 1820, documentation of a dispute with the town of Deerfield, and documents regarding paupers support.
