Scope and Content: The Thomas M. Carter Papers, 1841-1934, include correspondence, postcards, photographs, sheet music, newspapers, genealogy, and other miscellaneous items. The correspondence is mostly between Thomas M. Carter and his son of the same name. The correspondence gives a glimpse into Carter's everyday life in Newton, NH. Carter's son traveled often as a musical and did not see his father on a regular basis. The letters also show the older Carter's desire for his son to return home. The collection also contains newspaper articles that recognize Carter's musical accomplishments. There are also several legal documents, such as a marriage license and an IRS license within the collection. Carter also collected calling cards, musical programs, and postcards, which are also located in the collection. The papers include sheet music that Carter composed as well as two books of sheet music on the Peace Jubilee of 1869 and 1872. Other books in the collection include The Child's First Reader, The New Hampshire Justice of the Peace, the Carter Family Bible, and The Pilgrim's Process from This World to That Which is to Come.
