Abstract: William Neil (1746-1825) was born in Belfast, Ireland, and graduated from Glasgow College. Neil originally settled in Dover, NH, but then moved to Portsmouth, NH, where he was a highly successful merchant selling goods such as Irish linen and tea. Charles Neil (1778-1858), third son of William, went into his father's business and was a successful merchant in Portsmouth. The papers reflect the daily business of a general merchant dealing in goods such as sugar, tea, candles, wine, raisins, glass, tobacco, snuff, etc.
Scope and Content: The William and Charles Neil Papers, 1790-1852, consist of a will, correspondence, inventory of goods, list of debts, receipts, invoices, accounts, and bills. The collection contains 239 documents plus an anonymous and apparently unrelated item, "The Botanical Family Physician and Medical Receipts" found in Folder 12. The papers reflect the daily business of a general merchant dealing in goods such as sugar, tea, candles, wine, raisins, glass, tobacco, snuff, etc. There is business correspondence, a few personal letters and receipts, inventories and lists of debts, and bills and receipts from merchants in Portsmouth and Boston.
