Creator: Whittemore family.

Accession / Call Number: 1978.034

Object ID: 1978.034

Date: 1756-1932

Physical Description: 20 boxes

Scope and Content: The Whittemore Family Papers cover five generations of the family, 1756-1932. The papers of Aaron Whittemore (1808-1890) constitute the bulk of the collection. However, since the five generations of Aaron Whittemores did not use middle initials or distinguishing numbers, much of the collection has been organized chronologically without an attempt to separate the Aarons. This system was also used as they served consecutive but overlapping positions as Justice of the Peace and Deputy Sheriff. The estate papers contain information of many other local families. Box 19 contains papers related to Franklin Pierce and Asa Fowler's law practice in the 1830's and 1840's. There are 19 folders of papers on the Cocheco and other railroads dated 1845 to 1870. Pembroke town history for the years 1756 to 1867 is represented through deeds, town papers, receipts, taxes and Deputy Sheriff accounts. The papers of Arthur Gilman Whittemore of Dover, NH reflect city politics of the early 1920's. Caroline Rundlett Whittemore's papers show a profile of women's social activities and clubs of the period.
