Scope and Content: The collection consist of correspondence and documents relating to the history of the Indian Charity School and Dartmouth College, from 1765-1818. The bulk of the correspondence is between the College's founder and first president, Eleazar Wheelock, and John Phillips (1719-1795) of Exeter, NH, founder of Phillips Exeter Academy. The Wheelock-Phillips letters deal almost exclusively with the financial problems and needs of the College during its formative years, and call upon Phillips for continual monetary aid. Other correspondents for the early years of the College include Sylvanus Ripley, Eden Burroughs, and Bezaleel Woodward. There are also present a small number of John Wheelock letters. Among the documents are receipts for donations to the College, records of trustee votes, items relating to the College land claims dispute over Landaff Township, and a copy of the last will and testament of Eleazar Wheelock, filed in Grafton County, NH in 1779. The collection also includes a number of miscellaneous letters, both original manuscripts copies, and photostats and typed versions.
