Scope and Content: In part photocopies of Wentworth papers housed at other institutions. In part, photocopies (positive and negative) of originals in Records of Lords Commissioners of Trade and Plantations, British Public Record Office, London, Eng.; and transcripts (typewritten) of four letters in private collections. Correspondence, documents, tax receipts, and miscellaneous papers of the Wentworth family of Portsmouth, N.H.; together with correspondence of Lawrence S. Mayo concerning his gift to the State of the site of Governor John Wentworth's house in Wolfeborough, N.H. Material concerns a case before the Board of Trade and Plantations (1772), Dartmouth College, Fort William and Mary (1775), the King's woods, land grants, method of settling new lands (1729-30), military affairs, the Stamp act, and taxes. Members of the family represented include John Wentworth (1671-1730), Lieutenant Governor (1717-30), Benning Wentworth (1695-1770), Governor (1741-67), John Wentworth (1737-1820), Governor (1767-75), his mother Elizabeth (Rindge) Wentworth (1716-1794, his son, Charles Mary Wentworth (1775-1844), and Joshua Wentworth (1742-1809), merchant and State legislator; with references to Theodore Atkinson (1697-1779), Peter Livius (1727-1795), Mark Hunking Wentworth, and other members of the family. Published inventory in Historical New Hampshire (Spring, 1968).
